Important Update: Your BRP & the Transition to eVisa – What You Need to Know (and Relax!)
Hello everyone! Here at London Educational Consultants, we understand that navigating UK immigration changes can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to break down the latest news about the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and the move to eVisas in a clear and friendly way.
The Big News: BRP Extension!
Let’s start with the most important update: if you’re holding a BRP with a valid visa, you’ve got a bit more breathing room. Initially, all BRPs were set to expire on December 31st, 2024. Then, the Home Office extended the use of these cards until March 31st, 2025. Now, we’ve received fantastic news! You can continue to use your BRP until June 1st, 2025. This extra time is designed to give everyone a smoother transition to the new eVisa system. You can find the official announcement here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ It is extended to 1st June 2025.
What Exactly is an eVisa?
Think of the eVisa as your digital immigration record. The UK government is moving away from physical BRP cards to these online records. This shift is all about enhancing security, making processes more efficient, and modernising the UK’s immigration system.
Key Things to Remember:
- BRP Extension: As we mentioned, you can use your expired BRP (with a valid visa) until June 1st, 2025.
- eVisa Invitation: You might have received an email inviting you to create a UKVI account. If not, don’t worry! As of August 6th, you can create one without an invitation.
- Your Status Stays the Same: Getting an eVisa doesn’t change your immigration status or rights. It’s simply a new way to access and prove your existing status.
- Security & Convenience:Â eVisas are super secure and linked to your biometric data, and you can access them anytime, anywhere.
How to Make the Switch: Turning Your BRP into an eVisa
Ready to make the switch? Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Create a UKVI Account: This is your first step. If you get an invitation, follow the instructions. If not, head over to https://www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa and click “Start now.” You’ll need a valid email, a smartphone, and your BRP or passport details.
- Verify Your Identity: You’ll use the “UK Immigration: ID Check” app to confirm who you are. This involves scanning your passport or BRP and taking a facial scan.
- Access Your eVisa: Once verified, you can access your eVisa through your UKVI account.
Friendly Tips and Important Considerations:
- Act Promptly: When you’re ready, don’t delay the process.
- Keep Your BRP Safe (for now!): Even with the extension, until you have your eVisa fully set up and linked to your passport, keep your BRP on you when travelling. It’s always best to have a backup.
- Update Your Details: Keep your UKVI account up-to-date with any changes to your passport or contact information.
Extra Info and Support:
- eVisas will make things easier for employers and public services to verify your status quickly.
