- Having an NI number allows you to legally work and pay taxes in the UK.
When do Students Need an NI Number?
- You typically need an NI number if you earn more than a certain amount per week. The current threshold is £242 per week (as of July 2024).
How to Apply for a National Insurance Number as a Student:
- If you’re an international student and already have a job offer in the UK, your employer might be able to help you apply for an NI number.
- You can also apply online or directly call the National Insurance helpline at 0800 141 2075 if you live in England, Scotland and Wales or 0845 600 0643 if you live in Northern Ireland.
- They will ask you if you are already working or have started looking for work and can prove this. They will then take you through an application form over the telephone.
