Phone Expenses

Staying connected with friends and family back home, browsing the web and capturing memories – your phone is a lifeline during your UK student adventure. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and how to keep your phone bill under control.

There are two options you can choose:

1. Pay As You Go: Pay As You Go lets you top-up credit as needed. Get a SIM card from any high street shop or in Airport when you arrive (remember it’s expensive to use).

2. Contract: Contracts offer a fixed monthly price for calls, texts and data (generally price depends on data use, most service providers offer unlimited calls and texts).

We recommend to get a contract for more cost-effective options, consider a SIM-only contract. Bring your unlocked phone from your home country and insert a UK SIM card to make and receive calls, and use mobile data.

Understanding Your Costs:

  • Average Spending: UK students typically spend around £20-£30 per month on phone bills. If you take a phone contract it may go up to £100.
  • Hidden Fees: Be aware of charges for exceeding data allowances, international calls and premium rate services. If you are using a contract phone, you can always ask your service provider to put a cap on your price.

Cost-Saving Strategies:

  • Choose the Right Plan: Consider your browsing habits and choose a data plan that best suits you.
  • Utilize Wi-Fi: Whenever possible, connect to Wi-Fi hotspots (like university libraries or cafes) to avoid using mobile data.
  • Free Messaging Apps: Use apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger for free calls and texts over Wi-Fi.
  • Monitor Your Usage: Keep track of your data usage to avoid exceeding your allowance and incurring extra charges. Most providers offer apps or online tools for monitoring usage.
  • Consider SIM-only deals: These often offer cheaper monthly costs compared to phone contracts with a new handset.

Bonus Tip:

  • International Calling Apps: Download apps like Skype or Viber for affordable international calls, especially if you’re contacting loved ones back home.

Managing your phone expenses is about making informed choices. By understanding your needs and utilising cost-saving strategies, you can stay connected without breaking the bank.
