Shopping Before Departure

Here’s some guidance for what to consider shopping before you depart for the UK as an international student, taking into account both essentials and budgeting:

Also remember this > Must-Haves Before Departure:

  • Official Documents: Ensure you have all the necessary documents for your studies and visa application in order.
  • Passport: Valid passport with sufficient validity period (check the UK entry requirements for your nationality).
  • Visa: The appropriate visa for your studies in the UK (student visa, Tier 4 visa).
  • Travel Insurance: Consider comprehensive travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost luggage.

Essentials to Consider Before Departure (depending on weight/bulk allowance):

  • Warm Clothing: The UK can be significantly cooler than Nepal, especially in the fall and winter. Pack layers including a warm jacket, scarf, hat, and comfortable shoes suitable for walking.
  • Travel Adaptor: A universal travel adaptor will allow you to charge your electronic devices in the UK (uses a three-pronged BS 1363 plug).
  • Formal Attire: If you have any presentations, interviews or formal events during your initial settling-in period, pack one or two appropriate outfits.
  • Basic Medications: Pack a small supply of any essential medications you require to avoid complications upon arrival.

Wait to Buy in the UK (depending on accommodation and budget):

  • Bulkier Items: Heavy winter coats, boots or large appliances can be expensive to check in and might be more affordable to buy in the UK.
  • Bedding and Towels: Unless your accommodation specifically provides them, you might need to buy bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets) and towels upon arrival.
  • Kitchenware and Utensils: Depending on your accommodation (shared kitchen facilities or self-contained flat), you might need to purchase basic kitchenware for cooking meals.
  • Coursework Materials: Textbooks and other course materials might be cheaper to buy in the UK, especially if they are specific editions required by your program. Many universities have used book sales or student exchange programs for textbooks.

Additional Tips:

  • Research Clothing Sizes: UK clothing sizes can differ from Nepali sizes. Do some research beforehand to ensure a good fit when buying clothes in the UK.
  • Check Baggage Allowance: Be mindful of airline baggage allowances (both weight and checked bags) when deciding what to pack or buy beforehand.
  • Utilize Online Shopping: Many UK retailers offer online stores where you can browse and potentially purchase some essentials before you arrive. However, factor in shipping costs if applicable.
  • Student Discounts: Once you are settled in the UK, you’ll likely have access to student discounts for various things like clothing, electronics, and travel.

Remember:

  • Contact your University: Some universities might provide a list of recommended items to bring or suggest resources for finding essential items upon arrival.
  • Pack Light: It’s generally easier to manage your luggage on arrival and potentially buy some things in the UK. You can always ship heavier items back home if needed.

By planning and prioritising your needs, you can pack efficiently and avoid unnecessary expenses. Enjoy your studies in the UK!
