Traveling as Student

The UK offers fantastic travel options for students, from bustling cities to charming countryside. Here’s a breakdown of transportation options to consider, along with estimated student-friendly prices:

Within Cities:

  • Walking & Cycling: Totally free! Explore hidden alleys, soak in the atmosphere, and stay fit while saving money.

Alternatively, you can hire a scooter/bike (there are many companies):

  • Public Transport:
    • Buses: London buses are all cashless, so you need an Oyster card, Travelcard or contactless payment card (Debit Card/Credit Card) to ride. Bus fare is £1.75, and a day of bus-only travel will cost a maximum of £5.25. You can transfer to other buses or trams for free an unlimited number of times within one hour of touching in for your first journey (for £1.75). Outside, the London charges are different.
    • Trains (Underground/Metro): Faster but pricier. Single fares can range from £2.4-£5, with student discounts available. Day travelcard is £15.90 https://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/en/london-day-travelcard. If you need to travel more frequently (because of university+ work) we recommend you to make a weekly or monthly pass it will be more cheaper with student discount.
    • Trams (only available in limited cities like Croydon): have Similar pricing to buses no other extra cost.
  • Student Oyster Card (London): A must-have for London travel! Grants 30% off adult-fare travelcards and bus & tram passes. Apply online and collect at a station using the links provided below.

Intercity Travel (traveling outside London):

  • National Rail: The UK’s national train network. Consider:
  • Coaches: Great for budget travel between cities. National Express is a major provider. Expect fares from £5-£15 for shorter trips, increasing for longer distances. Consider student discounts offered by some companies.

Additional Options:

  • Ridesharing (Uber, Bolt): Convenient but pricier. Costs depend on distance and demand. Consider pooling rides with friends.
  • Hitchhiking: This is not super common in the UK and can be risky. Not recommended for solo travelers.

Saving Tips:

  • Student Railcard & Oyster Card: These can significantly reduce travel costs.
  • Coachcard (National Express): If you travel by coach frequently, a Coachcard offers up to 30% off fares for students aged 16-26.
  • Group Travel: Share travel costs with fellow students.
  • National Express Student Discount: Check their website for ongoing student deals on coach travel.
  • Off-Peak Travel: Plan journeys for weekends or evenings whenever possible.
